How marketplace pricing works

A simple example with real numbers.
2 mins read

Two prices are involved when a book travels from one lecturer to another: the marketplace price set by the author, and the class price set by the lecturer who teaches with it.

The two prices

The marketplace price is set by the author when the book is published. It is what the author gets for every sale, in any class.

The class price is set by the lecturer who assigns the book to their class. It is what the students pay, and it has to be at least NGN 1,000 above the marketplace price.

An example

An author publishes a book and sets a marketplace price of NGN 4,000. A lecturer assigns it to a class of 50 students and sets a class price of NGN 6,000.

For each copy sold:

  • The student pays NGN 6,000
  • The author gets NGN 4,000, minus their Akumo share
  • The lecturer gets NGN 2,000, minus their Akumo share

Across the whole class, the author receives 50 × NGN 4,000 and the lecturer 50 × NGN 2,000, each before their own Akumo share.

Students who already own the book do not pay again, so the number of sales can be lower than the number of students in a class.

Setting a class price for a marketplace book

Who pays which share

Each side pays the Akumo share only on their own share. The author's Akumo share applies to the marketplace price, the lecturer's Akumo shareto their margin. If either of you is connected to an institution, that share comes out of the same amount.

Paystack fees are not deducted from anyone. Akumo covers them out of the Akumo share.

Setting your prices

As a lecturer, the difference is yours, so a larger gap means more per sale but a higher price for your students. In a large course a smaller margin often earns more overall.

As an author, your marketplace price is the same in every class, whatever the lecturer charges on top. The more classes teach with your book, the more copies sell.
